A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is only as useful as it is trustworthy. A polished-looking PDF proves nothing on its own — it has to be genuine (actually issued by the lab it names) and it has to be tied to the specific batch you received. In a research-materials market where documentation is sometimes copied, reused across lots, or fabricated outright, knowing how to verify a COA is a core skill for any careful researcher. Why verification matters
A COA is the bridge between a supplier's claim and independent evidence. But two failure modes break that bridge:
- A COA that isn't authentic — reproduced, edited, or issued by an unnamed or non-existent lab.
- A COA that doesn't match your vial — real, but generated for a different lot, so it doesn't describe what you actually have.
Both leave you with numbers you can't rely on. Verification closes that gap.
Step 1 — Confirm it names a real, independent lab
Start with the issuer. A trustworthy COA identifies the testing laboratory by name, and that lab should be an independent, accredited third party — not just the seller's own bench. If the document is unattributed, uses a generic "quality lab" label, or names an entity you cannot find, treat the results as unverified. Step 2 — Match the lot/batch number to your vial
This is the single most important check. The COA should carry a lot or batch number, and that number must match the label on the vial you received.
- No batch number on the COA? It cannot be tied to anything — treat it as generic marketing, not evidence.

- Batch numbers match? Good — now the results actually pertain to your material.
Step 3 — Check the analytical methods and figures
An authentic COA shows how the material was tested, not just a headline number.

- Purity should be reported by [HPLC](/blog/hplc-purity-testing-explained) with an actual percentage and, ideally, a chromatogram.

Step 4 — Verify with the issuing lab when possible
The strongest confirmation is going to the source:
- Some independent labs let you verify a report by reference number or a QR code printed on the COA.
- If a QR code or verification portal is present, use it — confirm the report ID, the compound, and the batch all match.
- If no portal exists, a reputable supplier should be willing to connect you with the lab reference or provide the raw report on request.
Step 5 — Look for tampering red flags
A quick document review catches many problems:
- Mismatched fonts, misaligned fields, or a logo that looks pasted in.
- Dates that don't make sense (a test date after the ship date, or a COA older than the batch).
- A compound name or concentration on the COA that doesn't match the product page or label.
- PDFs stripped of all metadata or that won't let you select text (sometimes a sign of a flattened screenshot rather than an original report).
A quick verification checklist
- Named, independent, accredited lab? ✔
- Lot/batch number present and matching your vial? ✔
- Identity method (e.g. mass spec) with a matching mass? ✔
- Purity method (HPLC) with a real percentage/chromatogram? ✔
