It sounds reassuring — but it is not a regulated term, and on its own it guarantees nothing. Two vials both labeled "research grade" can differ enormously in identity confidence, purity, contaminant screening, and documentation. This article breaks down what the phrase should mean, and how a researcher can separate a meaningful claim from marketing language. "Research grade" is a claim, not a certificate
Unlike pharmaceutical grades, "research grade" has no single governing standard behind it. It is a claim a supplier chooses to make. That means the burden is on the researcher to ask: what evidence backs the label? A credible answer comes in the form of documentation, not adjectives. 1. Confirmed identity
The material should be what the label says it is. Identity is typically confirmed by mass spectrometry, which checks that the measured molecular mass matches the expected peptide. Purity should be measured and reported, not described in vague terms like "high purity." A meaningful "research grade" claim comes with an actual number, tied to the lot you received.
3. Contaminant screening
